WELCOME TO THE NYU FINE ARTS SOCIETY Bushwick Open Studios Saturday October 1st: Join FAS as we tour the Bushwick Open studios in Brooklyn!  Artists in the Bushwick area will open up their studios for walk throughs. Join us for a tour of different studios, experience the art being made by young artists in the Brooklyn community. We will meet at 12 at the BOS information booth at 56 Bogart Street off of the Morgan Avenue stop on the L train. The studios are spread out so wear shoes you can walk in! We will tour studios for the afternoon, feel free to come and go whenever you like. Workshop for Residents in Listed Buildings on the Waterfront

 

When: Fri 21st Oct – 5.30-7.00pm

Where: Cunard Building, Pier Head, Liverpool UK

A special Workshop has been organised by Engage in partnership with New York University who are bringing students of architecture and urban design to Liverpool to explore with residents and developers the experience of living in converted listed buildings.

It will take place on Friday 21st October 2016 from 5.30pm and will last no longer than 7.00pm. It takes place in the Cunard Building, Banquet Suite, Conference Centre, 6th Floor.

Only a few places are available for up to 3 families from each of the following residences: Colonnades, Albert Dock; Wapping Quay; Waterloo Warehouse andTower Building.

The Workshop is free and we hope to provide some refreshments. Harcourt Developments who have delivered The Titanic Hotel and Rum Warehouse are going to be present as they have already started developing Stanley Dock South Warehouse and the Tobacco Warehouse for residential use.

The works I will discuss explore painting, drawing, printmaking and three-dimensional process.” This event is free of charge and open to all NYU students.

Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors’ Private Collections

September 24, 2016 – December 31, 2016

Only yesterday, it seems, one was hard-pressed to name more than a handful of successful women artists; now the list would be extensive, and the choices rich and varied. Although numerous recent exhibitions have featured women’s art, scant attention has been paid to the collecting of art created by women. In fact, private collections are in the process of being dramatically transformed. Greenwich and nearby communities in Fairfield and Westchester counties are home to a number of the finest contemporary collections, and thus to some of the most exciting art being made today.

Themes specific to women continue to be of significance:

• motherhood, food, sexuality; beauty and its discontents
• stereotypes of femininity and their undoing
• intersections of gender and race

Equally important for Her Crowd is the current powerful resurgence of abstraction in its myriad forms:

• minimalist patterning
• expressive mark-making
• painterly exuberance

Numerous artists represented in the show traffic in unexpected collisions —

• of the second and third dimension
• of the carefully crafted and the found object
• of the concrete and the immaterial

Featuring works by artists from established figures to brilliant newcomers, the exhibition includes remarkable pieces by

Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors’ Private Collections will offer a glimpse into the exciting interchange between contemporary artists and their passionate collectors.

The exhibition is co-curated by Kenneth E. Silver, New York University Professor of Modern Art and Bruce Museum Adjunct Curator of Art, and Mia Laufer, PhD candidate (Washington University in Saint Louis) and Bruce Museum Zvi Grunberg Resident Fellow.

It will be accompanied by a fully illustrated scholarly catalogue and educational programming including a lecture series, film series, and an audio guide.

New Student Club

Here is our club Mission Statement:

Students are often advised to focus on one primary area of study and related fields: biology and chemistry, history and Philosophy, etc. But what about traditionally unrelated fields: photography and physics, film and computer science? If you are interested in seemingly different fields within the arts and the sciences, or even in just one pair of these areas,  The Golden Relationship: Art & Science is a club for you. It’s a haven where artists, scientists, musicians, and engineers can participate in events about their primary fields but also learn about the contrasting field, be it art or science. Through museum trips, student and teacher lectures, and creative interdisciplinary workshops, students discover the intricate relationship between these two supposedly opposite fields. To deny that science is a vital part of art and vice versa is simply an outdated limitation.

MUSIC OF REALITY – 23rd of September – Preconcert Event 5 PM – 6th Floor Meyer Hall

An evening of music and science with physics Professor Matthew Kleban, Dr. Tae Hong Park of the music department, and pianist Sophia Subbayya Vastek and composer David Ibbett performing original music for piano and live electronics. The theme of the event is the nature and study of noise in our world – from mapping urban noise pollution, to analyzing the Cosmic Microwave Background.

We warmly invite all those interested in the intersection of music and science to join us for our Preconcert Event – including a preview performance, an interactive musical workshop, and open discussions on how music and science can assist one another in today’s world.
